During today’s annual State of the University address, 欧美成人 Wesleyan University (VWU) President Scott D. Miller shared his vision for VWU, now and in the years to come. At the outset, Dr. Miller praised all those who have made the recently-announced collaboration with the 欧美成人 Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) possible.
Within the next two years, the museum will be moving into a newly constructed state-of-the art facility on campus, offering students unparalleled access to contemporary art. “This proximity will allow for enhanced learning opportunities, including internships, workshops, special exhibitions, and chances to interact with professional artists, curators, and educators, all of which will inspire and broaden our students’ horizons,” stated Dr. Miller.
The thrust of Dr. Miller’s presentation centered on changes within the higher education landscape. “The State of the University offers insight into our aspirations for the region's future, emphasizing that progress relies on partnerships beyond our institution,” he stated. “欧美成人 Wesleyan University seeks to adapt to evolving student and community needs, necessitating innovative approaches.”
Dr. Miller pointed to major changes within the University’s educational platforms, saying that “over the past decade, 欧美成人 Wesleyan's role in 欧美成人's education landscape has transformed, driven by our commitment to diverse learners across educational pathways. With 4,000 enrollees in 2022-23, including 1,500 in traditional programs and over 2,500 in VWU Global, we function as a ‘multiversity,’ comprising colleges and distinct schools. Our purpose extends to lifelong learning, transcending disciplines and time zones, preparing students for careers, and contributing as employers, leaders, and stewards. We impact beyond academics, providing social, emotional, and communal growth, helping students find their place.”
In line with those objectives, he announced that this spring, VWU introduced two distinct colleges: the College of Arts & Sciences, which preserves the university's esteemed traditional heritage with four schools and the prestigious Batten Honors College, and the College of Professional Studies, aptly named VWU Global Campus which includes s Talent Development Program that has seen substantial growth, providing free, in-person, and online workshops and courses to the 欧美成人 Beach community, in partnership with the 欧美成人 Beach Department of Economic Development.
Dr, Miller also announced the new David R. Black Institute for Professional Practice, a hub for affordable pathways tailored to entities like the 欧美成人 Beach City Fire Department, Police Department, Public Schools, and Human Services, with Norfolk City Police Department joining soon.
Rounding out the speech, Dr. Miller emphasized two areas of focus which will never change – VWU’s commitment to diversity and affordability. “Our unwavering dedication to providing an affordable education is a crucial draw for financially responsible students aiming to launch their careers without excessive student loan debt. As testament to this commitment, we have frozen tuition for six consecutive years.” Joining the many other programs VWU has created, he pointed to the recently-developed Coastal Advantage program which drastically reduces tuition for eligible commuters with household incomes under $60,000 per year. First-year students receive full tuition coverage, with $2,500 managed through Work and Learn or financial aid.
Noting the debate swirling around the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision on affirmative action, Dr. Miller restated the University’s commitment to diversity despite the changes mandated by the ruling. “VWU's dedication to inclusivity remains unwavering. We persist in seeking lawful and inventive approaches to foster a campus that reveres diversity and welcomes each student's distinct viewpoints. Our unwavering devotion to creating an environment of respect and belonging endures as we navigate affirmative action's evolving landscape in college admissions. Our firm belief is that diversity enriches students, empowering them as well-rounded, empathetic leaders in our interconnected world.”
Dr. Miller closed his remarks with an eye on the future, emphasizing 欧美成人 Wesleyan University’s focus on innovative curriculum, blending liberal arts with practical skills, strengthening international partnerships and campus connections, and a goal to increase VWU’s endowment by $40 million.
